Millennials want cars in the new normal: 1 in 2 are driving home for the holidays

Amsterdam, November 26, 2020 – CarNext.com, Europe’s leading online marketplace for high-quality used cars, has released the results of its new Millennial Car Survey, which reveals that 68% of millennials are now more likely to drive than take public transport, with 65% saying that the pandemic has led them to make the switch.

Compared to last year, more than half of people surveyed would now be more likely to drive to a special occasion this holiday season.

The Millennial Car Survey asked 3,000 millennials across six countries how their outlook on mobility and online car buying had changed due to the pandemic.

Commenting on the survey, Grainne van Berkum, Chief Operations Officer, said:

“Millennials have been seen as the generation who relied on public transport and ride hailing, but the pandemic has clearly changed the way they think they think about mobility. Even though millennials express the least fear about Covid-19, they now see the private car as the safer option in the new normal. This is a fundamental shift in mindset due to the pandemic. An additional shift we’ve seen is that half the millennials surveyed will be driving home for the holidays this year. One thing is clear in these uncertain times: the safety and comfort of the private car is even more important than ever.”

The key findings of the CarNext.com Covid-19 Mobility Survey driver survey are:

  • There is a clear preference for the private car over other mobility options: 68% of people surveyed are now more likely to drive than take public transport, with 65% stating their change in preference is due to the pandemic
  • Half of those surveyed are now more likely to drive to a special occasion this holiday season compared to last year due to the pandemic
  • 46% of drivers would consider buying online, with 33% deeming it a safer given the pandemic. That said, 41% of millennials still want to speak to someone to help them through the process of buying a car, and 68% find a trusted payment solution very important
